The FT has launched a free lifestyle magazine for iPad users just two weeks after its premium apps were pulled from Apple’s App Store.
How to Spend It is free to download and features content from the supplement’s print edition specifically packaged for the tablet device.
Ben Hughes, FT deputy CEO and global commercial director, said the ad-supported app will contain advertising slots including a: “brand hub where advertisers can showcase their brand and products in detail.”
How to Spend It is the first FT app launch since its premium apps were removed from the App Store late last month. The apps were removed from the outlet after the publisher publicly clashed with Apple regarding its in-app subscription policy, which requires publishers to hand over 30% for in-app subscription revenues (nma.co.uk 31 August 2011).
FT-readers trying to access its premium content using an Apple device are now directed to download its recently launched web-based app, which can be accessed from its website.
The FT’s ad-funded apps, such as its travel guides, were still available via the App Store but it remains unclear if its premium apps were pulled voluntarily by the publisher or were removed forcibly from Apple.
new media age has requested an interview with an FT spokesperson to discuss its mobile app strategy further and is awaiting a response.
