News Corporation’s iPad news title The Daily has finally hit the UK market, seven months after its high-profile launch in the US.
While the app, which is priced at 69p daily or £27.99 for a year, has been lauded for its “great price” and “great format” by reviews posted on the App Store, it has also attracted criticism for being too US-centric.
US president Obama, alongside vice president selection Joe Biden, is featured on the cover, with coverage of other US news, fashion and sport.
One reviewer said, “With no content for the UK market, it just doesn’t draw you in.”
News Corp launched the iPad-only title under Apple’s first in-app subscription model for publishers in February. News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch unveiled the app, alongside editor-in-chief Jessie Angelo, at a joint global press conference with Apple, broadcast live online .
The app, pitched as an “all-media” news product, features text, audio, image and video content, with the ability to interact with and manipulate images. Users can leave audio comments, while live Twitter feeds from commentators and celebrities will feature within articles.
The Daily features a central carousel navigation – similar to how album artwork is shown in iTunes – where news items are represented visually. Users can browse pages and sections with their fingertips, shuffle unread stories and consume them in audio or video formats.
The app allows users to share on social media platforms and email, as well as link in and out to the internet.
Meanwhile in August, AOL launched its first tablet magazine Editions .
