Google has made its first foray into physical retail outlets with the opening of its Chrome Zone in London to promote its cloud-computing services.

Chrome Zone outlets, promoting the Google Chrome laptop range, opened in IT retailer branches on London’s Tottenham Court Road last week.

In the stores, retail assistants are on hand to advise customers on the Google Chrome laptops, such as the Samsung or Acer ranges, which use cloud computing capabilities to store information on servers instead of on a PC.

More Chrome Zone outlets are expected to open in the coming months as Google aims to promote cloud-computing among consumers who have previously used PC-based computing.

Arvind Desikan, head of consumer marketing for Google in the UK and Ireland, said, “Chromebooks are the perfect notebook computers for people who live on the web, and offer a faster, safer and more secure online experience, without all the time-consuming and confusing maintenance required by typical computers.”

The Google Chromebooks are connected to the “cloud-based servers” via cellular or Wi-Fi  networks, which lets Google issue software updates automatically. See video below for further information.

Earlier this year, the UK’s smallest operator Three said it would be a “3G connectivity partner” Chromebooks in the UK
