Digital marketplace eBay is poised to process around $4 billion in mobile-enabled sales in 2011, double the number reported a year ago, the company's head of mobile business operations and development Steve Yankovich tells TechCrunch. (The $4 billion figure represents gross merchandise volume, not revenues.)

Users have now downloaded eBay's apps for platforms including Windows Phone (pictured) more than 50 million times.

Consumers have now downloaded eBay's applications for platforms like iOS, Android and Windows Phone more than 50 million times, with the eBay Marketplace app alone yielding 20 million downloads. Users now make three eBay purchases via mobile device every second--approximately half originate in locations outside the U.S., most from English-speaking nations like the U.K., Canada and Australia. In addition, eBay sellers now list more than 700,000 new items per week via mobile device.

This summer, eBay acquired mobile payments technology firm Zong for approximately $240 million in cash. The Zong platform promises to complement eBay's existing PayPal digital commerce efforts, giving consumers additional choices for conducting mobile and online transactions--PayPal has said that its 2011 mobile total payments volume will reach $3 billion, with the company now processing $10 million in total mobile payments volume each day.
