Major cable MSOs have launched a Facebook app that encourages subscribers to "like" movies that they watch on cable video-on-demand platforms.

The app was developed by cable pay-per-view and VOD content distributor In Demand, and is being marketed by CTAM, the cable marketing group that is backed by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, Cablevision and other major cable MSOs. It marks one of the cable industry's first efforts to use social media to drive programming sales.

CTAM is also running a sweepstakes promotion through the Movies On Demand Facebook app, where it will give daily prizes of $5 in "cable cash" that can be used for renting cable VOD movies. It will also award a 46-inch 3DTV to a grand prize winner.
