While much of the attention around Google's ambition to wire up places like Kansas City with Fiber to the Home (FTTH) have centered around higher data speeds, it appears that the search engine giant's ambitions could include TV services.

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, Google is mulling over plans to offer a paid consumer video service, a move that would bring yet another competitor to challenge cable's original cash cow.

According to the report, Google has held a number of "exploratory" discussions with a number of major networks including Walt Disney, Time Warne and Discovery Communications.

Google hired former cable TV executive Jeremy Stern to help secure these discussions.

At this point, Google is being tight lipped about the Journal's report. "We're still exploring what product offerings will be available when we launch Google Fiber," the statement said.
