ITV Player's Apple apps hit 2m downloads

ITV has clocked up 2m downloads for its TV catch-up player’s Apple apps.

The broadcaster launched ITV Player across all Apple devices earlier this summer as part of its ongoing distribution expansion strategy. It kick-started the mobile and tablet strategy with Android devices the month before, although is yet to provide break-out figures of its Android downloads.

ITV has also seen a 62% surge in views of long-form catch-up TV content across all platforms, including ITV Player, taking the total to 262m views year on year. Meanwhile monthly unique users to ITV.com rose 18% year on year to 10.6m.

The broadcaster attributed the increases partly to its editorial schedule of popular shows including Downton Abbey, along with the overall improvements made to ITV Player’s user experience.

Today ITV also revealed its interim management statement which revealed a 3% year on year rise in broadcasting and online revenues to £1.3bn for the nine months to 30 September.

ITV stated that it would continue to aggressively expand its ITV Player distribution strategy, having also rolled out on Sony’s PS3. It is also in talks with Microsoft over an XBox launch.

Under the broadcaster’s new online and on-demand structure ITV director of product strategy and audience engagement James Micklethwait will drive ITV Player’s cross-platform expansion strategy.

Micklethwait will also lead the broadcaster’s micropayment trials, due to start next year. It is on the lookout for its first micropayments manager.

The new structure centralises teams around four main product groups of which ITV Player is one. The remaining three are: programme and web support; commerce and ventures; and news and sport.
