The top 18 cable operators and telcos added 635,000 high-speed Internet subscsribers during the third quarter, according to data compiled by Leichtman Research Group.
Comcast, Time Warner Cable and other cable MSOs saw the most high-speed Internet subscriber growth, adding more than 525,000 customers. That represented 83 percent of the net broadband additions for the third quarter.
While AT&T and Verizon managed sign 642,000 to customers to their respective U-verse Internet and FiOS Internet servcies, the telcos had a net loss of 619,000 DSL subscribers.
"Following the traditionally weak second quarter, the broadband market rebounded with over 635,000 net additional broadband customers in 3Q 2011," LRG president Bruce Leichtman - a former Continental Cablevision executive - said in Friday's announcement. "Over the first three quarters of 2011, the top broadband providers added nearly 2.3 million subscribers, compared to 2.6 million subscribers added in the first three quarters of 2010."
