Denmark Planning 800Mhz Radio Spectrum Auction

Denmark's telecoms regulator is holding a public consultation on the details of plans to allocate blocks of 800Mhz radio spectrum, due to be auctioned off next May.

Last August, the  former Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation made a decision to award by auction available frequencies in the frequency bands 791-821 MHz and 832-862 MHz (the "800 MHz band"). At the same time, it was decided that the 800 MHz frequency band should be used for electronic communications services, including mobile broadband.

Subsequently, the Minister for Business and Growth has decided that an auction of licences in the 800 MHz band will be held in May 2012 and that the spectrum will be awarded nationwide on a service- and technology-neutral basis. This decision was made following a recommendation from the Danish Telecommunication Authority.

A total of 2x30 MHz is available in the 800 MHz band. In line with the objectives that everyone should have access to a broadband connection of at least 100 Mbit/s by 2020, coverage obligations have been defined for 800 MHz licences, aimed at improving the availability of broadband services in areas where the current availability of high-speed broadband services is the lowest.

The coverage obligation must be fulfilled by the end of 2014.

The consultation runs to the 15th December 2011, and the papers can be downloaded here.
