Chilean wireless market set for continued growth

One of the most developed countries in Latin America, Chile faces very similar telecom challenges to Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. Its mobile penetration surpassed one device per habitant, reaching 120.8% in June, with most subscribers on prepaid plans. The Chile wireless market is also in need of more spectrum to meet its growing telecommunications needs.

The country is served by 3G networks, but hasn’t yet scheduled auctions for 4G spectrum. Number portability is on its way and there are already two mobile virtual network operators offering service in Chile. According to Sub-secretary of Telecommunications (Subtel), which is the national regulator, from a total customer base of 20.8 million subscribers, 6.2 million were on postpaid plans with almost 70% (or 14.6 million customers) subscribing to prepaid services.
