DirecTV to slash spending in 2012

Bracing for the possibility that consumers will continue to cut spending in 2012, DirecTV says it plans to slash the amount of money it spends on programming and hiring new employees.

"We're tightening our belts in terms of spending. We'll cut back on overhead, hiring and programming," DirecTV CEO Mike White told Bloomberg.

While White says DirecTV is cutting spending on overhead, the company recently struck a deal to double the size of its corporate headquarters in El Segundo, Calif. His comments regarding spending cuts also come just a few weeks after it reported that it added 327,000 subscribers during the third quarter, which was its best performance in five years.
