The Romanian government has extended the existing GSM licenses held by Vodafone and Orange for an extra year, until the end of 2012.

The two companies paid a fee of EUR6.4 million for the extension, the government announced in a statement.

A new tender to renew the licenses will be held next year.

Both companies were awarded 15 year licenses in 1997.
