Google overhauls search home page

Google is rolling out a new home page designed to give prominence to other services including Google+.

The search giant, which first revealed plans to overhaul its home page last year, has replaced the traditional black bar across the top with a grey Google logo in the upper left corner.

This unfolds in a drop-down menu, which lists seven of its products including its social network Google+, Gmail and YouTube. A further eight products are then offered for visitors that click through on the ‘More’ tab.

The new design focuses on giving more prominence to its social network Google+, while ensuring a more consisent user experience across its product portfolio.

Google is yet to confirm a date for full roll-out. “We have rolled out the new Google bar to some users and are looking to broaden the rollout in the coming weeks,” said a Google spokeswoman.

The revamp marks Google’s biggest changes to its home page to date, and follows a major overhaul of YouTube. The video platform’s design revamp conicided with the launch of 100 original programming channels.
