Deloitte: 9% of consumers have cut cord on pay TV

About 9 percent of U.S. cable and satellite TV subscribers have cancelled their pay TV subscriptions, and about 11 percent of consumers are thinking about cutting the cord on pay TV, Deloitte reports in its "State of the Media" survey.

Survey respondents cite the ability to watch programming online as a key reason to cancel pay TV subscriptions, according to Deloitte. The firm's survey found 14 percent of consumers said their favorite way to watch a movie is to stream it to a computer or TV, up from 9 percent in 2009.

The Deloitte survey doesn't track the number of consumers who have cancelled subscriptions to premium channels such as HBO or Showtime in an attempt to reduce the cost of their cable bills. It only asked consumers if they have dropped pay TV subscriptions altogether, or plan to cut the cord.

Also worth noting from Deloitte's survey:

  • 44 percent of cable and satellite TV subscribers have a digital video recorder.
  • 15 percent of respondents said they will most likely watch movies, TV shows and videos from online video sources in the near future.
  • 20 percent of respondents ages 23 to 28 have read their favorite newspaper in the past six months on a mobile phone, up from 9 percent in 2010.
