Twitter acquires social news aggregator Summify

Twitter has acquired startup Summify, which aggregates key updates and announcements within users' social network timelines and delivers summary accounts via mobile app, email or the web. Financial details were not disclosed.

Summify announced the deal on its blog, noting its staff--led by co-founders Mircea Pașoi and Cristian Strat--will relocate from Vancouver to San Francisco to join Twitter's Growth team. Summify will disable new account registrations immediately and will also remove some features, indicating it eventually will shut down the product completely; Summify's iPhone application has already disappeared from Apple's App Store.

Twitter confirmed the Summify acquisition to Mashable but did not specify how it plans to integrate the aggregator service into its microbloggling platform, with a spokesperson stating only that Summify "will help people connect and engage with relevant, timely news."

Twitter now boasts more than 100 million active users, 55 percent of whom are active on mobile devices. According to the Pew Internet Center, 13 percent of adult Americans who go online are on Twitter--by comparison, more than 50 percent use rival social network Facebook.
