RIM claims the number of users of its BlackBerry devices is still growing and that apps on the platform generate more revenue than Android.
Over 2bn apps have been downloaded from BlackBerry’s App World store (pictured), which contains has more than 60,000 apps, generating 6m downloads per day, according to RIM.The smartphone manufacturer, which recently saw its founders and ex-CEOs ousted from office (nma.co.uk 23 January 2012), used the BlackBerry DevCon Europe event this week to announce that the platform is not in decline.
During the conference, the company also claimed that 13% of developers have made $100,000 (£62,813) or more from downloads of their products from App World.
Quoting research, Alec Saunders, RIM’s head of developer relations, said that BlackBerry apps were more profitable that those on the Android platform.
Speaking separately at the conference, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins also spoke about the company’s upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform, saying that it would use cloud technology to allow seamless computing across smartphones and tablets.
“We want to make it effortless for people to use all their apps and not always have the in/out paradigm,” said Heins. “This is the heart of BlackBerry 10. It’s to be effortless in everything you do.”
