Atlantic Broadband loses basic video subs, gains digital, high-speed Internet and phone customers

Atlantic Broadband said it counted 255,273 subscribers at end of the fourth quarter, losing nearly 11,000 basic cable customers in 2011. The good news: it picked up 8,257 high-speed Internet, 3,363 telephone and 3,767 digital cable customers last year.

The MSO, which operates systems in parts of Florida, Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina and Pennsylvania, reported $329.1 million in revenue for the year, up about $12 million from 2010. Increased marketing of its cable modem product helped it post an 8.1 percent increase in high-speed data revenue, and its commercial revenue grew 14.4 percent.

"We expect that revenue trends will continue to be positive as we continue to experience increased residential and commercial subscriber levels in our high speed data and telephone offerings through targeted marketing efforts and the increased utility of a broadband connection to our available video subscriber base," the company said in its earnings release on Tuesday.

Like other cable MSOs, Atlantic Broadband reported increased expenses for cable programming. It reported $143.8 million in operating expenses in 2011, compared to $141.3 million in expenses in 2011. "We expect that operating expenses will continue to rise as a result of annual programming contract increases and growth in total revenue generating units which will result in increased direct expenses as we service a larger customer base," the company said.
