Time Warner Cable and Verizon Wireless are beginning to team up on joint promotions in several markets, offering $200 debit cards to subscribers who order new phone and cable service in Kansas City, Raleigh, N.C., and Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio.
Verizon Wireless kicked off a similar promotion with Comcast in Seattle, San Francisco and other markets earlier this year, offering subscribers that ordered new cable and wireless phone products a $300 Visa debit card. The promotions are the result of joint marketing agreements that the cable MSOs signed with Verizon last year. Those deals were tied to deals the cable MSOs reached with Verizon to sell the company advanced wireless spectrum.
The Verizon-cable deals have drawn criticism from some consumer groups, and the Department of Justice and FCC are reviewing the agreements. While the spectrum deals have not yet been approved by regulators, that's not stopping Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Verizon from pursuing joint promotions. Verizon may launch similar joint marketing efforts with Cox Communications and Bright House Networks, which also reached marketing deals with Verizon that were tied to spectrum agreements.
