Verizon picks up 180K FiOS TV subscribers in Q1 2012, but growth slows

Verizon said Thursday that it added 180,000 net new FiOS TV subscribers during the first quarter, along with 193,000 FiOS Internet customers. Its growth slowed compared to the fourth quarter, when Verizon signed 194,000 FiOS TV and 201,000 FiOS Internet customers.

Verizon said it generated $148 in average revenue per unit from FiOS homes, which was the same figure that it reported during the fourth quarter. The telco said its first-quarter operating revenue from its wireline division dipped 2 percent to $9.9 billion, while FiOS services represented 63 percent of its wireline revenue during the period.

Also worth noting from Verizon's earnings report:

  • Verizon counted 4.4 million FiOS TV and 5 million FiOS Internet subscribers at the end of the first quarter.
  • FiOS growth slowed compared to the first quarter of 2011, when Verizon added 192,000 FiOS TV and 207,000 FiOS Internet subscribers. Its FiOS net additions fell by 6.3 percent, while its FiOS Internet net additions dropped 6.8 percent.
  • Verizon said it has seen the number of subscribers that order a triple play of digital video, high-speed Internet and landline phone service jump 19 percent compared to the first quarter of 2011.
  • Verizon reported earnings per share of 59 cents in the first quarter, which was an increase of 16.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
