Time Warner Cable challenges News Corp. with launch of regional sports channels in California

Time Warner Cable said Thursday that it'll flip the switch on two regional sports networks in California on Oct. 1.

The networks--Time Warner Cable SportsNet and a Spanish-language version, Time Warner Cable Deportes--will compete with News Corp.'s regional sports channels, Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket, for rights to carry games from pro sports teams.

Time Warner Cable will launch with games from the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers franchise, which ran previously on Fox Sports West. The regional sports channels will also carry games from the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks and the Los Angeles Galaxy, a professional soccer team.

The MSO will look to distinguish its regional sports networks through multiplatform distribution. Time Warner said both networks will offer regional subscribers streaming video delivered to personal computers and mobile devices.

"We're developing these networks from the fans' perspective and investing in the technology and talent needed to respect that passion. Whether in their living rooms or on the go, fans will always be able to follow their local teams with our multiplatform coverage," Mark Shuken, SVP and GM for Time Warner Cable Sports Regional Networks, said in Thursday's announcement.

Time Warner Cable didn't announce any distribution deals for the RSNs. It may face some challenges licensing the networks to DirecTV, Dish and other rival distributors.
