Brazil's four mobile networks paid a collective BRL 2.56 billion (US$1.24 billion) for additional radio spectrum in an auction arranged by the telecoms regulator, Anatel.
The winning bidders will be required to construct LTE networks in the country's host cities by April 2013, in time for the 2014 soccer World Cup. Secondary affected cities will need to be added by the end of 2013.
Telefonica Brasil paid BRL 1.05 billion for 20Mhz of spectrum. America Movil also bid for 20Mhz of spectrum, and paid BRL 844.5 million.
Tim Brasil paid BRL375 million for a 10Mhz block of national spectrum, and some additional regional licenses. Oi paid BRL345 million for a similar package.
In addition to boosting mobile broadband capacity in urban areas, the licenses carry conditions relating to improving basic services in rural areas.
Other bidders for regional licenses that will permit fixed-wireless internet services include the Pay-TV broadcasters, Sunrise Telecomunicacoes and Sky Brasil Servicos.
