Cable One loses high-speed data, video subscribers in Q2 2012

Cable One lost 1,017 high-speed Internet and 9,610 basic video subscribers during the second quarter, The Washington Post Co. , its parent company, reported Friday.

While most cable MSOs continue to shed basic-cable subscribers each quarter, it's unusual for a cable operator to end an earnings period with fewer high-speed data customers. Selling broadband Internet service has become the biggest area of growth for cable operators.

Cable One was one of at least three cable MSOs that had gained basic video customers during the first quarter, picking up 916 video subscribers. It ended the second quarter with 612,729 subscribers from its systems in 19 states, including Alabama, Arizona, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington.

The MSO did manage to add 1,086 voice customers during the first quarter, ending the period with 187,095 voice subscribers. It has grown its voice subscriber count by more than 13,000 in the last year. It has also gained 18,069 high-speed Internet subscribers in the last year.

Cable One posted $195.6 million in revenue during the second quarter, up 2 percent from this time last year. But its net income slid 5 percent, to $38.4 million.

The Washington Post Co. reportedQ2 net income of $51.8 million ($6.84 per share),  up from $45.6 million ($5.74 per share) during the second quarter of 2011.
