India's consumers, according to a new report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), like their broadband connections.
As of July this year, the country had 14.68 million broadband subscribers, up 1.2 percent from the 14.5 million it had at the end of June this year. On a year-over-year basis from August 2011 to July 2012, broadband subscribers grew 17.4 percent.
Leading India's broadband race is incumbent provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Bharti Airtel with 9.36 million subscribers and 63.7 percent market share and 1.37 million subscribers and 9.3 percent market share, respectively.
Following BSNL and Bharti is Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) with only 1.08 million subscribers and 7.3 percent market share.
Another service provider that's also making inroads into India's broadband market is newcomer Bharat Telecom Limited. In June, BTL announced a plan to provide Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services, including only IPTV and data, to homes and businesses in Mauritius.
With over 156 ISPs providing broadband services in the country, it appears that India's broadband market is competitive, something that will help drive down prices for consumers.
