SK Broadband, one of South Korea's largest service providers, on Thursday became the latest service provider to build out a 100G optical network.
Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent's (NYSE: ALU) optical equipment, including its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), the 100G network was built to support SK customers' appetite for IPTV, high definition video, broadband data and Ethernet-based business services in both Seoul and the neighboring GyeongGi province.
As seen in a host of other 100G deployments this year, the message here is also about enabling agility to serve current and future needs with the ability to support up to 8.8 Tbps of capacity.
SK Broadband can use the 1830 platform to support a host of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, meaning they keep costs low by reusing their existing network infrastructure.
Coming on the heels of its recent OTN/WDM deal with China Telecom, the win with SK Broadband is significant for Alcatel-Lucent as it further establishes its presence in another major Asia Pacific market, a region that it sees as a growth engine.
