Rwanda to Block Counterfeit Phones from Mobile Networks

Rwanda's telecoms regulator, RURA has said that the country may follow Kenya's lead and issue an order to the mobile networks to block the use of counterfeit mobile phones.

Earlier this week, Kenyan mobile networks blocked between 800,000 and 1.3 million handsets from their networks following a year long campaign by the regulator to shut-down fake phones.

Regis Gatarayiha, the Director General of RURA, told The New Times that plans to shut-down fake phones would come into effect "very soon".

"It's an initiative that has been agreed upon within the East African Communications Organisation (EACO) and for the case of Rwanda, we are still working out a plan, soon we shall announce the directive to switch the fake phones off the networks," the RURA boss said.
