MetroPCS Customers to Be Migrated to T-Mobile USA Following Merger

Deutsche Telekom is expecting to generate cost savings of six to seven billion dollars following the merger of T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS, the company's CFO, Tim Höttges has revealed.

Citing the benefits of the merger he said that T-Mobile USA will receive more than nine million additional customers, as well as valuable spectrum, especially in urban areas where the company is planning its LTE network.

He also confirmed that once the merger is completed, MetroPCS customers will be migrated over to the T-Mobile USA network. The company expects that around 60% of its customer base will be migrated within a year as they upgrade their mobile phones.

The MetroPCS network is expected to become obsolete and dismantled fairly quickly, although he didn't predict a timeframe for that. The company can then reuse the spectrum that is freed up - for the expansion of the LTE.

Commenting on the write-down that Deutsche Telekom announced at the time of around EUR7-8 billion, Tim Höttges said this was an accounting change caused by the way the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is arranged.

He said that the IFRS accounting practices are based on the price of MetroPCS shares before the announcement of the transaction. The merged company is therefore valued on the basis of the share price of the smaller company, without taking into account the benefits of the transaction.

Asked about the possibility of a counter-bid by Sprint Tim Höttges maintained that the company's offer is very attractive. "That's how things stand right now" he ended.
