Facebook Testing Free Wi-Fi Hotspots Service

Social networking website, Facebook is reported to be testing a new service, that would give its users free access to local Wi-Fi hotspots, if they log in via their Facebook account.

The service, which was noticed by a UK based developer appears to be based around providing Wi-Fi routers to businesses subject to the venue having a Facebook page the user is redirected to after they have logged in.

"When you access Facebook Wi-Fi by checking in, you are directed to your local business's Facebook Page. Some stores may also offer deals or specials when you check in," a Facebook spokesperson told Cnet.

While building out its own Wi-Fi infrastructure would give the company its own controlled network, it would be a very slow process and limited in scope as most major retailers and cafes have already signed up to offer Wi-Fi coverage with other providers.
