Natale, S., Surace, B., Mensa, E., & Befera, L. (2025). ChatGPT for cultural heritage and the customization of generative AI: A talkthrough analysis of the Luigi Einaudi chatbot. New Media & Society. https://doi.org/10.1177/14614448251384258

【Call for Participants】Research Workshop: How to Study Conversational AI: Introducing the Talkthrough Method
Theme: How to Study Conversational AI: Introducing the Talkthrough Method
Speaker: Simone Natale, Associate Professor, University of Turino
Time: 09:00–13:00, 15 June 2026
Location: Communication University of China
Organizers:
The National Joint Institute of International Communication Research of Ministry of Education of China
The National Centre for Communication Innovation Studies, Communication University of China
Number of Participants: 20-30
Language: English
This workshop introduces an innovative digital method for studying conversational AI: the talkthrough method. Developed by Simone Natale in collaboration with Iliana Depounti, talkthrough invites researchers to adopt the perspective of users and engage in systematic conversations with conversational AI models. By making use of the flexibility and performative character of conversation, this method helps researchers understand the conversational dynamics, interaction patterns, and affordances of AI systems.
The workshop will last four hours. Assoc. Prof. Natale will first introduce the basic principles, research logic, and possible applications of the talkthrough method. Participants will then be guided to select a research question and case study, and to apply a simplified version of the method in practice. By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to gain both conceptual understanding and hands-on experience that can support their independent research.
Participants are required to read the following article before the workshop:
Natale, S., Surace, B., Mensa, E., & Befera, L. (2025). ChatGPT for cultural heritage and the customization of generative AI: A talkthrough analysis of the Luigi Einaudi chatbot. New Media & Society. https://doi.org/10.1177/14614448251384258
Please send your application information to cics@cuc.edu.cn by 8 June 2026.
Please use the following email subject line: “Talkthrough Workshop Application + Name + School/College”
The email should include the following information: name, school/college, degree programme (PhD or Master’s), phone number, and research interests.
Around 20-30 participants will be selected for the workshop. Successful applicants will be notified on 10 June 2026.
